Blue Space IT was engaged to transform a remote, off-grid sheep farming operation in the Northern Cape into a connected and remotely manageable environment. The farm is located in a complete connectivity dead zone — with no internet, no cellular coverage, no radio frequencies and no conventional communication infrastructure.

Following a comprehensive assessment process involving mountain-top surveys, terrain analysis and operational planning, the project delivered farm-wide connectivity, CCTV surveillance, remote monitoring capabilities and improved communications across key operational areas.

The solution now enables management to monitor livestock, infrastructure and daily operations from both the farm and Johannesburg while providing a scalable platform for future expansion.

Project Introduction

Klein Pardekloof is a remote sheep farm situated approximately 110 kilometres from Carnarvon in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, bordering the SKAO (Square Kilometre Array Observatory) and MeerKAT radio astronomy region.

The farm operates in one of the most isolated areas of South Africa, where vast distances, limited communications infrastructure and challenging environmental conditions create unique operational and security requirements.

The project began when the farm owner posted a request on a regional farming WhatsApp group seeking a service provider capable of delivering reliable farm-wide Wi-Fi connectivity and CCTV surveillance. Blue Space IT responded to the request and was subsequently recommended by several members of the farming community who were familiar with the company’s work and reputation.

Following initial discussions with the client, Blue Space IT conducted a comprehensive site assessment to understand the farm’s operational requirements, geographical challenges and future growth objectives before developing a tailored connectivity and surveillance solution.

Site Assessment & Planning

Before any solution could be designed, Blue Space IT conducted an extensive on-site assessment to understand the operational requirements, terrain challenges and future growth plans of the farm. The assessment involved a journey of approximately 1,000 kilometres from Johannesburg to Klein Pardekloof. The initial survey was conducted over a one-week period, including travel time, and was carried out directly with the farm owner to ensure a thorough understanding of both current operations and future requirements. Given the size and remote nature of the property, the assessment extended far beyond a traditional site survey. The team travelled across the farm to inspect existing infrastructure, identify critical operational areas and evaluate potential locations for future communications and surveillance infrastructure.

GPS coordinates were recorded for existing facilities as well as strategic future expansion points. Particular attention was paid to terrain analysis, line-of-sight opportunities and the suitability of elevated locations for communications infrastructure.

A key component of the assessment involved physically hiking to multiple mountain peaks across the property. Five separate mountain-top locations were evaluated as potential high sites to support future connectivity requirements. These inspections allowed Blue Space IT to assess visibility between locations, identify optimal coverage areas and evaluate the practical challenges associated with deployment and ongoing maintenance.

One of the most significant challenges identified during the assessment was accessibility. Reaching many of the potential high-site locations required climbs of between 30 and 45 minutes, often carrying equipment and tools. The absence of utility infrastructure meant that any future installations would need to operate independently using solar power and battery systems. Consideration also had to be given to long-term maintenance and troubleshooting, as future support visits could require technicians to repeat these demanding climbs under challenging environmental conditions.

The assessment further confirmed that the farm operates almost entirely off-grid. There is no cellular network coverage in the area and no conventional utility services available. Communications were limited to a single satellite internet connection located at the main farmhouse, providing Wi-Fi coverage only within the immediate residence. Water is supplied through borehole systems, while electrical power is generated through solar energy systems deployed across the property.

Several key operational areas were identified as requiring connectivity and surveillance coverage, including the main residence, workshop facilities, shearing shed, werkskraal, feedlot areas, staff accommodation, agricultural pivots and strategic water infrastructure. The client also required visual monitoring of remote dam locations to improve operational awareness and reduce the need for routine physical inspections.

Project Timeline

Initial Engagement – Late 2024

The project originated when the farm owner posted a request on a regional farming WhatsApp group seeking a solution for farm-wide connectivity and CCTV surveillance. Blue Space IT responded to the request and was subsequently recommended by several members of the farming community familiar with the company’s work.

Site Assessment – October 2024

A comprehensive site assessment was conducted over a one-week period. The assessment included a 1,000-kilometre journey from Johannesburg to the farm, GPS mapping of existing and future infrastructure locations, terrain analysis and mountain-top inspections to evaluate potential communications high sites.
The survey identified key operational requirements, environmental challenges and future expansion opportunities that would ultimately shape the final solution.

Solution Design & Planning – October 2024 to April 2025

Following the assessment, Blue Space IT developed a detailed solution designed specifically for the farm’s operational requirements and environmental conditions.
The design process focused on:
– Farm-wide operational connectivity.
– CCTV surveillance of critical infrastructure and livestock areas.
– Remote monitoring capabilities.
– Off-grid power requirements.
– Future expansion capacity.
– Long-term reliability and maintainability.
– Compliance considerations associated with operating near the SKAO region.
Final design approval was received in April 2025.

Implementation Phase – June 2025

Deployment commenced in June 2025 with a dedicated installation team supported by farm personnel. Over a two-week period, the core communications and surveillance infrastructure was successfully installed and commissioned.

Optimization & Expansion – July 2025

A follow-up visit was conducted during July 2025 to complete system optimization, fine-tune network performance and install additional surveillance cameras requested by the client following the successful deployment of the initial solution.

Deployment in a Remote Environment

Implementing technology infrastructure in a remote agricultural environment requires a very different approach to traditional commercial installations. With no nearby suppliers, limited access to replacement equipment and long travel distances from major centres, reliability and preparation were critical throughout the deployment process.

Installation activities were carried out during the Northern Cape winter months, providing more favourable working conditions than the extreme summer temperatures commonly experienced in the region. Even so, cold mornings, long working days and the logistical challenges of operating in a remote environment required careful planning and coordination.

The project was delivered by a two-person Blue Space IT team supported by two members of the farm staff. This collaborative approach assisted with transportation, access to remote locations and the practical realities of working across a large operational area. Throughout the deployment, infrastructure was integrated into existing farm facilities while maintaining a focus on reliability, serviceability and future expansion. Every installation decision was made with the understanding that maintenance visits could involve significant travel and access challenges.

The result was a robust communications and surveillance platform capable of supporting daily farming operations while remaining practical to maintain in a remote environment.

Building Infrastructure for the Long Term

One of the key project requirements was providing visibility within the feedlot and livestock management areas, where the client required both operational monitoring and surveillance coverage. Achieving this objective required more than simply mounting cameras. Communications and power infrastructure needed to be extended into active livestock areas while ensuring long-term protection from environmental conditions, daily farm operations and animal activity.

To support these requirements, dedicated civil works formed part of the implementation process. Trenches were excavated in strategic locations to accommodate protected infrastructure routes and create a foundation for future expansion.

The deployment was designed with durability and maintainability in mind, ensuring that critical communications and surveillance systems could continue operating reliably within a demanding agricultural environment.

This approach allowed the farm to gain enhanced visibility of livestock operations, including lambing areas and feedlot activities, while maintaining the flexibility to expand coverage as operational requirements evolve.

Off-Grid Communications Infrastructure

One of the most significant challenges identified during the assessment phase was the complete absence of utility power in several locations requiring connectivity and surveillance coverage.

To address this challenge, dedicated off-grid communications platforms were deployed to support network infrastructure in remote operational areas. These systems were designed specifically for the environmental conditions encountered on the farm and incorporated independent power systems, battery storage and intelligent power management capabilities.

The objective was not only to provide reliable operation under normal conditions, but also to minimize maintenance requirements in locations where access could be time-consuming and logistically challenging.

Each installation was carefully planned to support both current operational requirements and future expansion opportunities. This approach ensured that additional infrastructure could be integrated as the farm’s communications and surveillance requirements continue to evolve. The resulting platform provides a resilient foundation for remote connectivity and surveillance while supporting the self-sufficient nature of the farm’s operations.

Operational Results

The surveillance system was designed to provide visibility across critical operational areas of the farm, including livestock management facilities, water infrastructure, feedlot operations and surrounding operational zones.

The deployment successfully enabled remote monitoring from both the main residence and off-site locations, allowing management to maintain oversight of day-to-day activities from anywhere with an internet connection.

The Karoo Night Sky

One of the defining characteristics of the area is its exceptionally low levels of artificial light pollution. As the sun sets behind the surrounding mountains, the sky transforms into vibrant shades of gold, orange, pink and purple before revealing a spectacular display of stars.

The farm’s location within the broader SKAO region highlights the importance of preserving radio silence and minimizing interference, making careful technology planning an important part of the project. The dark skies and remote landscape create an environment unlike anywhere else in South Africa, where technology and nature coexist.
