Karoo Liquid Gold

Remote Farm Connectivity & Surveillance Solution

Karoo Liquid Gold is a premium organic olive farm located in the picturesque Groenfontein Valley, approximately 15 kilometres outside Calitzdorp in the Western Cape. Surrounded by rugged mountain ranges and the natural beauty of the Klein Karoo, the farm produces high-quality organic olive oil from approximately 5,500 olive trees spread across five separate olive orchards.

The property consists of several operational areas, including the main residence, workshop, staff accommodation, guest cottage, natural dam, and water storage tanks, all of which required varying levels of surveillance and wireless connectivity.

Internet connectivity to the property is provided via a MorClick satellite connection, enabling remote management and monitoring of the surveillance infrastructure from both the main residence and off-site locations.

Karoo Liquid Gold

The client approached Blue Space IT with several key objectives:

  • Enhance security by deterring theft and vandalism across the property.
  • Enable live remote monitoring of farming operations from both the main residence and while away from the farm.
  • Extend reliable Wi-Fi coverage to operational areas to improve communication and day-to-day productivity.
  • Provide dependable surveillance coverage of key assets, access routes, orchards, water infrastructure, and operational facilities.
  • Deploy a resilient solution capable of operating reliably in remote areas where commercial power was unavailable.

These requirements formed the foundation of a fully integrated surveillance, wireless networking, and solar-powered infrastructure designed specifically for the demanding conditions of the Klein Karoo.

Project Challenges & Timeline

Designing and deploying a surveillance and wireless networking solution in the Klein Karoo required careful consideration of the unique environmental and operational challenges presented by the site.

The farm spans multiple olive orchards separated by uneven terrain, natural vegetation, and mountainous landscapes. Several surveillance locations were beyond the reach of commercial power, making conventional CCTV installations impractical.

Additional challenges included:

  • Providing reliable power to remote surveillance locations.
  • Maintaining stable wireless connectivity across large distances.
  • Ensuring continuous operation during varying weather conditions.
  • Protecting critical farming infrastructure without disturbing the natural environment.
  • Working safely in remote terrain where wildlife, including Cape Cobras, may be encountered.

Solution Design

Blue Space IT designed a fully integrated surveillance and wireless networking solution tailored specifically to the farm’s operational requirements.

The solution incorporated strategically positioned surveillance towers to provide coverage of key operational areas while extending wireless connectivity throughout the property.

The design included:

  • Solar-powered autonomous surveillance towers.
  • Wireless point-to-point communication links.
  • Remote network management.
  • CCTV monitoring from both the main residence and remote locations.
  • Expanded Wi-Fi coverage for staff and operational activities.
  • Integration with the existing MorClick satellite internet service.

Every tower location was carefully selected following GPS surveys, line-of-sight analysis, and drone reconnaissance to maximise coverage while minimising infrastructure requirements.

Planning and Site Survey

Comprehensive planning formed the foundation of the project.

Before installation commenced, Blue Space IT completed detailed site assessments that included:

  • Physical inspections of all operational areas.
  • GPS mapping of proposed tower locations.
  • Line-of-sight verification for wireless links.
  • Drone aerial surveys of orchards and terrain.
  • Solar exposure assessments.
  • Identification of suitable cable routes and equipment locations.

This planning process ensured optimal surveillance coverage while reducing installation time and future maintenance requirements.

Installation and Implementation

Following completion of the design phase, installation commenced across the farm.

The implementation included:

  • Construction of multiple surveillance tower locations.
  • Installation of weatherproof equipment enclosures.
  • Solar panels, battery systems and autonomous power infrastructure.
  • CCTV cameras positioned to monitor orchards, access roads, operational facilities and critical assets.
  • Wireless communication equipment linking remote locations back to the main network.
  • Network configuration, camera commissioning and remote monitoring setup.

Each installation was completed with careful attention to cable management, weather protection and long-term reliability in harsh outdoor conditions.

Technology Deployed

The completed solution incorporated multiple technologies working together as a single integrated platform.

These included:

  • Hikvision IP surveillance cameras.
  • Ubiquiti wireless networking equipment.
  • Solar-powered remote power systems.
  • Battery-backed autonomous operation.
  • Remote monitoring and management.
  • Weatherproof outdoor equipment enclosures.
  • Wireless point-to-point communication links.
  • Secure remote viewing via the existing satellite internet connection.

Working in the Klein Karoo

One of the defining aspects of this project was the environment itself.

Surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges, olive orchards, river valleys and open landscapes, the Klein Karoo offers extraordinary natural beauty while presenting unique engineering challenges.

The installation required working across rugged terrain in high temperatures, transporting equipment to remote locations, and adapting to rapidly changing weather conditions. Wildlife also formed part of the working environment.

During the installation, the team encountered a Cape Cobra while working in the field, highlighting the importance of maintaining constant environmental awareness and following strict field safety procedures.

Despite these challenges, the project was completed safely and successfully, demonstrating Blue Space IT‘s ability to deliver dependable infrastructure in demanding remote environments.
