Key operational locations, water infrastructure, livestock facilities and potential high-site locations were recorded during the assessment phase to ensure complete coverage of critical farm operations.

Coverage modelling and feasibility assessments were conducted during the planning phase to validate connectivity objectives and identify opportunities for future expansion while considering environmental and regulatory requirements.
“Blue Space IT conducted detailed surveying, mapping and feasibility assessments to validate coverage objectives and future expansion opportunities.”

Following the site survey, operational areas, infrastructure locations and future expansion points were documented and mapped to support the planning process.

View from a mountain-top survey location overlooking the surrounding valleys and operational areas. Understanding the terrain was critical in developing a communications strategy capable of overcoming the geographical challenges presented by the remote Northern Cape landscape.
Initial Engagement – Late 2024
The project originated when the farm owner posted a request on a regional farming WhatsApp group seeking a solution for farm-wide connectivity and CCTV surveillance. Blue Space IT responded to the request and was subsequently recommended by several members of the farming community familiar with the company’s work.
Site Assessment – October 2024
A comprehensive site assessment was conducted over a one-week period. The assessment included a 1,000-kilometre journey from Johannesburg to the farm, GPS mapping of existing and future infrastructure locations, terrain analysis and mountain-top inspections to evaluate potential communications high sites.
The survey identified key operational requirements, environmental challenges and future expansion opportunities that would ultimately shape the final solution.
Solution Design & Planning – October 2024 to April 2025
Following the assessment, Blue Space IT developed a detailed solution designed specifically for the farm’s operational requirements and environmental conditions.
The design process focused on:
– Farm-wide operational connectivity.
– CCTV surveillance of critical infrastructure and livestock areas.
– Remote monitoring capabilities.
– Off-grid power requirements.
– Future expansion capacity.
– Long-term reliability and maintainability.
– Compliance considerations associated with operating near the SKAO region.
Final design approval was received in April 2025.
Implementation Phase – June 2025
Deployment commenced in June 2025 with a dedicated installation team supported by farm personnel. Over a two-week period, the core communications and surveillance infrastructure was successfully installed and commissioned.
Optimization & Expansion – July 2025
A follow-up visit was conducted during July 2025 to complete system optimization, fine-tune network performance and install additional surveillance cameras requested by the client following the successful deployment of the initial solution.

Installation and commissioning work at the main operations centre. This location became the central monitoring point for the farm’s communications and CCTV infrastructure.

Distributed network equipment being installed within one of the operational areas. Connectivity was extended beyond the main residence to support farm operations and staff communications.

Blue Space IT technicians working alongside farm personnel during the installation phase. Local knowledge and collaboration played an important role in the successful deployment of infrastructure across the property.

Installation and alignment of wireless communications equipment forming part of the farm-wide connectivity solution. Reliable connectivity between operational areas was essential to achieving the project’s objectives.

Custom-built off-grid power and communications enclosure installed to support remote network infrastructure. These systems were designed to operate independently in areas without access to utility power.

On-site configuration and commissioning of remote communications infrastructure. Every remote location was tested and validated before being placed into service.

Weather-resistant enclosure installed in a remote operational area, providing protection for critical communications infrastructure against dust, temperature extremes and environmental exposure.

PTZ surveillance camera installed within the feedlot area, providing operators with live visibility of livestock activities, lambing areas and daily operational conditions.

Indoor wireless access point and surveillance camera installation extending reliable connectivity and security coverage into operational buildings.

Wireless backhaul infrastructure deployed to distribute connectivity beyond the main residence and support communications across operational areas.

A directional wireless link installed to provide reliable long-distance connectivity between remote operational areas and the farm’s core network infrastructure.

Enterprise-grade wireless access point providing stable connectivity for staff and operational activities within farm buildings.

Preparation of remote communications site prior to installation of surveillance and wireless networking equipment.

PTZ surveillance camera installed at height to provide visibility over large operational areas that would otherwise be difficult to monitor.

Installation of wireless networking and surveillance equipment on elevated infrastructure to achieve maximum coverage across remote operational areas.

Existing windmill infrastructure identified as a suitable mounting platform for communications equipment, reducing construction requirements while maximizing coverage.

Combined wireless networking and surveillance infrastructure mounted on a repurposed windmill structure, creating a resilient remote monitoring point.

Completed remote communications site incorporating wireless connectivity, surveillance systems and off-grid power infrastructure.

Elevated PTZ surveillance camera providing live monitoring of remote operational areas and critical farm infrastructure.

Long-range surveillance coverage of the primary operational area, including farm buildings, storage facilities and surrounding agricultural land. The elevated camera position provides broad situational awareness across critical infrastructure.

Surveillance coverage of the Rond Dam and water storage infrastructure. The solution assists with remote inspection of water resources and enables rapid identification of maintenance or operational issues.

Remote camera installation monitoring the Klein Dam and associated water infrastructure. This provides management with continuous visibility of water levels, pumping systems and surrounding activity without requiring travel to the site.

“This installation and project made a huge and significant difference to my life, as it allowed me to focus on growing and
marketing the business. It allowed me to monitor farm operations from all over the world and communicate effectively with staff.”
